Images From The Canon EOS M5 And EF 50mm f1.2L USM:

Happy New Year everyone!  I imagine some of you had a very late night ;).  I sure did, so I’m going to keep today’s post short and sweet.  Tomorrow, I’ll be posting my Billingham S4 review for those who are interested.  Now, I’ll be talking about a really cool setup that I’ve been using for the last couple of weeks in addition to the 50mm Summilux-SL that I’m reviewing.  I’ve been shooting with the Canon EOS M5, and it’s actually a really cool camera.  There’s a lot to love about it, and some things I think Canon should work on but overall, I can definitely see it as a strong competitor to cameras such as ones in the Fuji X-Series.  I have a bunch of lenses on loan with it but one in particular has really been so much fun to use with the EOS M5: the Canon EF 50mm f1.2L USM Lens.

With the crop factor, the 50mm f1.2L lens becomes a nice short tele for the EOS M5.  In general, ultra fast lenses are going to be big and somewhat cumbersome but when this lens is mounted to the EOS M5, it actually feels really nice, and smaller than one would think.  You’ll still get the front heaviness since the camera body is so light but it’s not that bad.  The combo is very easy to handle and use.  It’s absolutely great for portraits, and it feels compact enough that at least for me, I have no need for a vertical grip or anything like that.  I’m using the Canon EF-M Lens Adapter Kit, so I have full autofocus as well.  The autofocus so far is very quick and accurate.

So, here are some pictures I’ve taken with this setup.  Pretty much everything here has been taken at f1.2.  I’ll go into more detail with this setup in a future post along with more pictures because it’s been so awesome to use.  A comparison with what I think is a great rival to this combo is also in the works.  Of course, I will also write up a review for the Canon EOS M5.  It’ll be a fun review; there’s actually a lot I want to say about it.  Anyway, I hope all of you enjoy the pics, and again, Happy New Year!

  • Nice pix! Luv the Combo especially with the AF.

You should try the same thing with the Leica m 50mm f1.4… Smaller footprint. I believe way less distortion than the canon f1.2 (for twice the price) and the tabbed manual focusing. The M5’s focus peaking, touch drag interface and new EVF make it quite the compact system to tote and the Summilux’s image quality!

      Thanks Arthur!

Yes, the AF is nice, especially when it is fast :). The Leica Lux would be awesome on this little camera. It’s my favorite M lens. I’ll have to give it a try the next time I get my hands on the M5 again. Thanks for stopping by!

I just stumbled across your post about the M5 with the 50 1.2. I really like how accurate the focus is with mirrorless cameras and large aperture lenses. With my 6D and D750 I can’t ever shoot wide open and get photos in focus like those you posted. I might have to pick up an M5. The Fuji cameras have very accurate focus but I never cared for the look of the pictures next to my canon.

      Hi Brad,

The Canon M5 is a nice camera, and yeah, I had absolutely no trouble getting sharp images at f1.2. It definitely does not hurt that it’s ultra compact as well :). Thanks for stopping by!

    I do love this combination.

Now, nearly two years later, Viltrox has come out with a really nice 0.71x focal reducer with AF for EF lenses on EF-M for $156. That means that with this lens and two small adapters (same size, but one has a glass element inside), you can have basically a 50mm f/1.2 and a 35mm f/0.85 (in terms of an EF-M equivalent), which when mounted on the 1.6x crop Canon APS-C sensor in the M5 give you the FF equivalents of roughly an 80mm f/1.9 and a 57mm f/1.4 with L quality glass. That’s a great portrait combination without having to buy a second lens (e.g., EF-M 32mm f/1.4 for $480 or EF 35mm f/1.4L for $1500.)

In fact, you can get the M5 for under $500, the 50mm f/1.2L for under $1000 and the two adapters for under $300. That’s a killer combination for $1500-$1800 (depending on how long you are willing wait for good deals.) Add the EF-M 22mm f/2 pancake for under $200 for a nice walk-around lens.

      Hi Chris,

That sounds awesome. I have not used the M5 since the review (it was a loaner) but I did like it with the 50mm f1.2 very much :). I only wish I reviewed it a little later only because I shoot more portraits nowadays, and it would’ve been great to use that combo more. The camera itself was a great walk-around body in general. Thanks for stopping by and sharing that info!

      Best,

      Patrick
