Some 75 Summilux Love :):
I seriously love the 75 Summilux. It’s such a classic. I’m so glad my dad never sold it because I seriously love how the 75 Summilux performs on the Leica M9. He gave me his copy when I bought my M6 TTL. Too bad my copy focus shifts like crazy (It took a few tries to get the picture of the orchid sharp). In fact, because of the focus issues that I have with this lens, and it’s sheer size, I kind of used my 50 Summilux ASPH to replace both my 35 Summicron ASPH and the 75 lux. First off, I’m not the biggest fan of the 35mm even though I admit it’s probably the most useful lens for the Leica M system. Second, the 50 Summilux ASPH can definitely be used as a portrait lens so in some ways, it can replace the 75mm. The 50 lux ASPH is a very versatile lens, and I personally think it’s the best lens in the Leica catalog.
But I do miss shooting with the 75 Summilux because you can get even closer to your subject than with a 50mm, and at the same time get even more of that beautiful Leica bokeh that we all have grown to love. As I said in my 75 Summilux Review, the depth of field at F1.4 is even more narrow than a 50 Noctilux F1.0. It’s not just thinner, it is extra creamy, and luscious :). You get all of this at a cheaper price than the 50 Noctilux F1.0 as well. But if you’re interested in this lens, you better hurry because prices are going up. People are starting to realize how amazing this lens performs on the M9, and it’s about time :).
