Bronx Zoo: Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 OS Sports Lens:
Hey everyone. So, as some of you know, I was lucky enough to get a chance to test the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 Sports for L mount, so I could write a review for it to be posted on its release date. As I said in my full review (can be found here), I know the L mount system consists of Panasonic, and Sigma in addition to Leica but speaking as a Leica SL2 shooter, it’s just great to have a lens of this focal length range for a Leica camera :). Back in my M days, you would never see a lens like this for obvious reasons. But now that there’s the SL system, there’s no reason why us SL shooters shouldn’t be able to use a lens like this one.
So, testing a lens like this in New York City wasn’t going to help me get the most out of it, which is why I took the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens to see wildlife; I didn’t have the opportunity to go hiking around in the woods somewhere, so I decided to take it to the Bronx Zoo. I thought testing it there would really give me a feel for the focal length range, which it did. I also thought it was a great way to test it’s portability, and if I could carry it around all day. This is a long range zoom, which means it’s definitely not going to be the size of a prime lens, for example. With that said, for a lens of this range, it’s pretty portable. I wasn’t using a tripod with it, and instead, taking all my shots hand held. I was also carrying this lens around with me the entire day just looking for photos.
↑ This was shot through a dirty glass window. The settings were f6.3 and 6400 ISO. I used the 335mm focal length.
↑ Here’s a photo taken with the 209mm focal length. The settings were f5.4 and 6400 ISO.
↑ This photo was taken with the 212mm focal length. The settings were 2500 ISO and f10.
Anyway, as I’m writing this right now, Hurricane Henri is hitting us, and it’s not like I can go out and shoot much, so I had a few left over images from the Bronx Zoo, and I thought I’d post them. I rarely use a lens like the 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens, and it’s just so good to see something like this in L mount. I’ve also added some of the photos from my review (which you can find here), which I particularly liked. I figured not everyone has seen my review, and so I might as well share them here. As some of you know, I am a boudoir and street fashion photographer; I rarely get to shoot photos like this, and I have to say, it’s quite fun!
↑ Here’s another shot taken through a window using the 600mm focal length. The settings were 6400 and f6.3.
↑ This image was taken at the f5.5 using the 232mm focal length. I used 1600 ISO.
↑ This was taken with the 600mm focal length through a window. The settings were 4000 ISO and f6.3.
Bottom line is the 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens is such a cool lens to have for L mount. It really just adds to the versatility of the system. It also handles quite well, the autofocus is fast, and the image quality is truly exceptional. It’s worth noting that it worked perfectly with my SL2.
↑ This was taken using the 153mm focal length. The settings were f5.1 and 1000 ISO.
↑ Here’s a photo taken with the 600mm focal length. The settings were f6.3, and 320 ISO.
↑ This was taken with the 419mm focal length. The settings were 1250 ISO and f8.
I didn’t know what to expect when I found out that I was going to be able to test the 150-600mm but I have to say, I am truly impressed by it. This is really a great lens for those needing a focal length zoom range like this for the L mount camera. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the photos, and thanks for stopping by!
