More Wildlife From The Sigma 100-400mm Contemporary:
Hey everyone. I was fortunate to get my hands on a pre-launch sample of the Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary in Fujifilm X mount to test, which I posted a full review of on launch day. For those wanting more info on the lens, the review can be found here. I had a fantastic time with it, and it’s so nice to have another long telephoto option for X mount. In addition to it producing phenomenal images, I found it to be a great match ergonomically for the compact Fuji X Series system. The lens is lighter, and more compact than what typically is expected from a long telephoto zoom, and it balances beautifully with the Fujifilm bodies. Anyway, I had a few left over images that I thought I would post them here.
I get a small commission from purchases made through the links mentioned in this review, which in turn, helps support this site but it will not cost you anything extra. Thank you!
Being that I live in New York City, it isn’t always easy for me to find wildlife around here. If you’ve been following this site, I normally photograph people, models, cityscape, and some street. So, I decided to take the Sigma 100-400mm out to the Bronx Zoo, and that’s where these photos came from.
↑ This was taken using 100mm, 2500 ISO and f5.
↑ This was taken using 6400 ISO and f6.3. I used 286.7mm.
In my review, I talk about the specs etc. but what I really want to emphasize here is how easy it is to live with this lens considering its long range zoom. A lens like this on a mirrorless body isn’t always a match made in heaven. Sometimes, we need the extra length but carrying it around, isn’t always the most fun. However, the 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary really does match well with the Fujifilm bodies considering what it can do. It’s really not that heavy or large considering the massive range. I was handholding everything. In fact, the only time I even used a tripod was when I was out shooting some cityscape at night.
↑ I used 6400 ISO and f6.3 here. The focal length was 243.1mm.
↑ I used 400mm and f6.3 here. 160 ISO was also used.
The trade off here is the slower maximum aperture range but I feel it is worth it for many. These days, cameras have better high ISO capability. Also, I’m here with a lens that I can literally carry around in the scorching heat of summer for several hours, and not feel like I want to go home lol. It’s a lens that in addition to being used for more specific photographic ventures, it can also be used for more general photography as well. If I owned it, I would probably end up using a lot more than something with a much larger aperture.
↑ This was shot with 400mm and f6.3. 160 ISO was used.
↑ I used 2000 ISO and f5.6 here. the focal length was 211.8mm. It’s a little darker on the right edge because of the fence.
Getting to the photos, I do what I usually do which was run the RAW files through Capture One. Capture One is my go-to RAW processor. I didn’t go crazy with editing, I just made simple adjustments, and maybe some color correction.
↑ I used 379.3mm and f6.3 here. 200 ISO was used.
↑ For the last photo, I used f6.3 and 160 ISO. The focal length used was 312.2mm.
So, I hope you enjoy the photos, and if you have any questions and the Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary, please feel free to comment below. You can also find more images in my full review of this lens here. As always, thanks for stopping by! Stay tuned for more to come!
