Leica M11 Thumb Support Review

Leica M11 Thumb Support Review:

In terms of the overall design, the Leica M hasn’t changed much over the many decades it has been around.  Like a Porsche 911, the design is classic, and new iterations of the M whether film or digital are always more evolutionary than revolutionary in terms of ergonomics.  The user base loves this obviously but there is a little bit of a problem.  The original design of the M was a film camera, and nowadays, we are in the digital era.  Applying a film design to a digital body doesn’t always work out perfectly.  For instance, unlike the film bodies, the digital Ms don’t have rewind cranks, which means you lose that added support where one could once rest their thumb.  So, one handed operation with a Leica M11, for example, may not feel quite as secure as with a Leica M6.  To fix this, some third party manufacturers produce thumb rests that you can insert into the hot shoe of a digital M.  Leica has also jump on this bandwagon as well, and this article is a look into the Leica M11 Thumb Support. Sigma 14mm f1.8 DG HSM Art First Impressions L Mount

Sigma 14mm f1.8 DG HSM Art First Impressions L Mount:

There have been a lot of cool wide angle lenses that have been released for L mount lately.  Many of them are compact, and designed for more general use.  While those are great options, especially for travel or daily use, sometimes, one needs something that is a bit more specialized.  This is where something like the Sigma 14mm f1.8 DG HSM Art comes into play.  It might be larger, and heavier than your typical daily user but in addition to Art series optics and build, it comes with a large f1.8 maximum aperture. Thanks to Sigma, I was able to get a copy to test.  Here’s my first impressions of it. [continue reading…]

Sigma 50mm f2 DG DN Contemporary Review L Mount

Sigma 50mm f2 DG DN Contemporary Review L Mount:

Almost every manufacturer out there has a 50mm in the f2 range because it’s a lens that a lot of photographers look for in a system.  The focal length is great for a variety of subjects, f2 is plenty fast for low light situations, a shallow depth of field can also be produced, and the lens is usually pretty compact and light.  Best of all, it’s not incredibly difficult to make a 50mm f2 with great optics, and it’s usually one of the cheaper lenses that you can purchase in a system.  So, it makes sense that the Sigma 50mm f2 DG DN Contemporary lens is added to the I Series collection.  Thanks to them, I was able to get a pre-launch sample to test.  Here’s my full review.
