  • Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the info! Any improvements on the AF?

Also, I think it would be a great idea to make a post about your different settings on the Xpro1 depending on the context and shoots you wanna get. I personally wonder often whether to use MF with preset focus distance or AF when shooting people in the street – you don’t want to miss the instant but it’s quite frustrating when the focus ain’t perfect because of bad distance estimation…

    Cheers!

      Hi Adrien,

Sorry for getting back to you so late, I’ve been busy getting ready for my vacation. Good question. I just installed it but I haven’t had a chance to actually take my X-Pro1 out. I’ve been busy packing (I always wait to the last minute and never learn 🙂 ). I played around with it at home, and to me, I don’t really see much of a difference in terms of the AF speed. But I am taking it on vacation with me so I will get back to you when I come back! Also, please let me know what your impressions are with the new firmware.

I think that’s a great idea about the post Adrien! I never thought about that, thanks! I will definitely write one up when I get back. With the X-Pro1, I strictly use autofocus. The XF 60mm is slower than the other two lenses but I find the XF 35 actually pretty good on the street. For me, I sometimes need to slow down a bit so I can get the shot. Plus, I usually try to anticipate the moment before it actually happens. I don’t get every shot, and you’re right, sometimes it is frustrating. But the beauty about street shooting is that there’s so much opportunity out there! If you don’t get one, you have thousands of other opportunities :). Try out the autofocus a bit more, it’s actually not bad. I definitely find the autofocus kind of like a vacation compared to my manual M9 lol. Plus, if you end up getting a shot at F1.4 with the XF 35mm, it looks pretty awesome! Take care Adrien, and thanks for visiting, and leaving your thoughts!

      • Thanks for your reply, and looking forward to your post on settings!

Your blog and others have been very inspiring, just got back into taking photos and I learn a lot thanks to all this great info out there. Thanks for sharing! I left a link to my DigitalRev profile, would be happy to have your critic on my “work” if you have some time one of these days.

I went for a session yesterday with the latest firmware, haven’t notice any difference but I’m still learning the inside/out of the camera.

I agree with you, AF performance is not that bad with the 35mm lens, especially in day light. Will definitely follow your advice and shoot more in AF.

        Enjoy your holidays!

        Hi Adrian,

Sorry for the late reply, and thanks for the well wishes. I got back a couple of days ago, and I’ve just been really busy unpacking/processing my files. I did shoot everything in AF but I didn’t notice much of a difference with the autofocusing speed as well. The Fuji files came out nice though, especially with the colors in Bermuda :).

Thank you for your kind words, I sincerely appreciate it. It is really flattering, and I just hope that I can pop up more stuff that you, and others will be interested in. I only got into blogging recently with the the help of my brother in-law, and its been a lot of fun. It’s actually a lot more work than I thought but overall a very good experience. I figured it would be kind of cool since I myself am always on other people’s blogs looking for stuff. There is so much valuable info out there, and it’s just awesome that you can learn so much from others in this way.

BTW, I went on your DigitalRev page, and I love your stuff! Seriously, you have some really nice photos. All your stuff is great but the two that are my favorite are the one where the vendor is falling asleep, and the guy with the cowboy hat. You really capture the feel of the people in city with your photos, and you have some really unique perspectives, such as, the photo of the girl lounging on the cement wall or the photo of the laundry mat. Great stuff!

Thanks for visiting here, and I really hope to hear from you soon! Take care!

      • Hey Patrick,

Thanks a lot for your feedback and kind words. Honestly, I feel like my pictures are quite weak (at least for now), but I’m having a lot of fun taking them! Going out for few hours, discovering new neighborhoods, chatting with strangers, looking at the world with a “different” eye… that’s the best!!

I can only imagine how much work this blog must be… Well, that’s very brave and generous of you, thanks and congrats! I think I would be too lazy for such a thing… But again, keep up the good work, and know that it makes a difference to some people out there. Got my filters and little tripod following your articles 😉 And to be honest, probably my camera too!

Got a question or two for you: I really really feel like getting the 18mm lens. 1. I’ve got the 35mm for only about two months, should I keep on shooting with that lens before moving on to a new focal length? 2. Does Fuji has nice lenses for the xpro1 in the pipeline? If so, don’t you think it might be better to wait for these?

Alright man, looking forward to reading you soon. And enjoy the weekend in the city – might be a little less hot than for the past two days!

        Cheers!

        Hey Adrien,

It’s always great to hear from you! Thanks again for ALL the kind words. I really like your photos, and I’m not just saying that. Plus, it’s great to see someone so enthusiastic about photography.

This blog can be a little overwhelming sometimes but it’s really nice to hear that it makes a difference to people as enthusiastic as you are about photography. It really drives me to write more. It’s honestly the best compliment that I have ever received about this blog, and thank you! I’m also very glad that some of the stuff I wrote about has served you well. You should try blogging maybe in the future. Starting was the hard part for me but once I got going, I was driven to work on it more. I use to surf on a lot of photo blogs but it’s funny because now I’m mostly on mine :). It just because I really enjoy working on it more and more, especially when I have readers such as yourself visiting. Hey, if you ever want to write a guest post, please feel free to contact me. It’d be great to hear other people’s experience with the X-Pro1 or whatever you feel like writing concerning photography.

As for your questions, let’s start with the lens one. I just want to get this out: I’m a big 50mm guy. I use the 50mm lens A LOT because I use to shoot with a Leica M3, and the widest lens that you can get for it is a 50mm. I got use to it, and now it’s my preferred lens. But there are times when I just need something a bit wider, and in those instances, I usually go for something like a 35mm. With the Fuji, it would be the 18mm. A perfect example of this is when I was in Bermuda. I was completely surprised to find out that my most used lenses by far were the 35 Summicron ASPH for my M9, and the 18mm for the X-Pro1.

Let me ask you, do you ever feel like you need something wider than a 50mm with your style of shooting? If so, then I don’t think there is a substitute. Getting something like a 28mm equivalent is something you might need to get used to a bit at first but it’s a completely different way of shooting that you might want to explore. The perspective error in a lens as wide as a 28mm equivalent is fun to exploit in certain situations. Plus, if you shoot indoors a lot, sometimes a 50mm lens is just not wide enough to cover everything.

If you just want to stick with one focal length for now to get use to it, then that is perfectly understandable as well. But for me, I don’t know if I could just live with a 50mm. I know there are people out there who say that you have to completely master your one focal length first before you go buy another one but having one wide angle and one standard lens is not bad at all. Don’t get me wrong, there is such thing as TOO many lenses but in my opinion, two lenses is perfectly fine. Think about it, people have zooms ranging from wide to telephoto these days. Plus, photography is suppose to be fun, and for me, it sucks when I can’t get a shot because I don’t have a lens that’s wide enough. Some want to use one focal length to specialize in something but for me, I want to be able to use my camera in multiple situations, especially for the prices that I have to pay for them :). There are times when I just need a wide angle, and times when only a longer focal length will do. If you have a wide angle and standard focal length in your bag, you pretty much have all you need, and that’s what I usually carry almost 100% of the time with both my M9 and X-Pro1.

To answer your second question, yes, there are some rumors lurking around that Fuji might be releasing some new lenses…even some zooms. There is talk about a new 14mm F2.8 coming soon as well, which sounds kind of cool. But from the rumors, most of the lenses won’t come out till 2013. If I hear anything else, I will let you all know.

Thanks for stopping by again, and feel free to leave another message. I hope you have a good week. I was not out at all this week because I’ve been crazy busy processing my photos, and plus the heat was killer! This week should be better though :). Take care, and talk soon!
