Sigma 50mm f2 DG DN Contemporary Review L Mount:
Almost every manufacturer out there has a 50mm in the f2 range because it’s a lens that a lot of photographers look for in a system. The focal length is great for a variety of subjects, f2 is plenty fast for low light situations, a shallow depth of field can also be produced, and the lens is usually pretty compact and light. Best of all, it’s not incredibly difficult to make a 50mm f2 with great optics, and it’s usually one of the cheaper lenses that you can purchase in a system. So, it makes sense that the Sigma 50mm f2 DG DN Contemporary lens is added to the I Series collection. Thanks to them, I was able to get a pre-launch sample to test. Here’s my full review. Sigma has been steadily adding more, and more new lenses to their L mount APS-C catalogue, which is great. Today, they announced another lens worth looking into: the Sigma 23mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary. With an equivalent focal length of 35mm, I imagine this will prove quite useful to many looking for a decent everyday lens that they can use for travel, street photography to even environmental portraits. Thanks to Sigma, I was able to get a pre-launch sample to test. Here’s what I think of the new 23mm f1.4. [continue reading…]

What do all of you think of this? I’ve always said that Leica has the SL system now, so they should produce longer telephotos for people that need them. I think this is a great direction. Sigma has definitely been doing this for the L mount system for a while now, as some of you know. They do have something similar focal length wise, which I have reviewed for those interested. The link to the review is here. The price for the Vario-Elmar-SL 100-400 is $2,195, which isn’t too crazy for Leica either. the 1.4x Extender is priced at $875. As always, thanks for stopping by! There are some specs below that I’ve listed:
- Optical image stabilization system compensates for up to 4 stops of camera shake.
- Detachable Arca-type-compatible tripod base.
- Fast internal focusing.
- Weather-sealed design with AquaDura coating.
Leica SL2 and SL2-S Firmware Version 5.1:
For those with a Leica SL2 or SL2-S, firmware version 5.1 has been released. It seems like a small update this time with the main focus being on two improvements, which are:
- Improved flash photography with Profoto units.
- Firmware versions numbers for SL2 and SL2-S aligned.
So, for those running Profoto lights, this might be worth it. I have not installed it in my SL2 yet but will probably do it before the weekend. The links to Leica’s firmware pages are down below. Have a good one!
