First Snowstorm of 2014: Winter Storm Hercules

Winter Storm Hercules:

Winter Storm Hercules hit us last night, and it was pretty intense but what really makes this snowstorm so bad, in my opinion, is the extreme cold that came along with it.  After shoveling for the whole morning, I thought I’d go out with my new Fuji X-E2, but I didn’t get far.  I live by the water, so I definitely feel the cold around here.

Check out the weather that I woke up to this morning:

It says 12° but look at what the “RealFeel” says: yes, that is a negative sign in front of the 17.

They say when you’re young, you love when it snows because you get to play in it.  As you get older, you realize that it means you’ll have to shovel it and commute in it.  Personally, I still love it when it snows.  Winter Storm Hercules was pretty intense but I don’t think I will ever forget the snowstorm we had a few years ago.  Here are some of the pics that I took with my Leica M9 after the snowstorm in December of 2010:

As you can see from the pics, cars and buses were abandoned in the middle of the road.  If you want to see more photos from that snowstorm, you can find them in my older post here.

As I said before, I didn’t get far, so sorry everyone, this is not going to be a big post.  But below are just a couple of photos from what Winter Storm Hercules left in my neighborhood.

    Hi Patrick,

Hope all is well. I remember similar temps when I lived in Toronto! Love the images especially the b&w, looks like screen grabs from Roland Emerich movies. How’s the EX-2? Still rockin the X-Pro1 and doing some videos with the Blackmagic Pocket so I’m looking at MFT lenses now but currently using C-mount lens with MFT adapter.

      Hi Dane,

Thanks and and it’s great it hear from you! I hope you’re having a great start to the New Year. Sorry for the late reply. I got sick, then I hurt my back, and right now, I’m just catching up with stuff. Great that you’re still using the X-Pro1. The X-E2 is pretty cool. It’s very similar to the X-E1, so it doesn’t feel like I purchased a new camera :). The files are cleaner though. Last we spoke, you were really starting to get into the Blackmagic stuff. It’s great to hear you’re still with it. I also remember you mentioning that you were either going to start shooting with medium format film or you were shooting with medium format film…something with a Mamiya, right? How’s that going?

      Take care,

      Patrick

  • Hey Patrick,

Happy New Year and get well soon! I’m the only Fuji shooter within my circle of friends so I have to check the X-E2 the old fashion way. Haven’t been to a camera store since buying the X-Pro1. Now that the 56mm 1.2 is almost available I might finally be able to have something similar to the Canon 85mm 1.2, at least field of view equivalent. I posted some photos on Flickr (Pacific Northwest and Tennessee/NC) using just the X-Pro 1, 35mm and the zoom 18-55. Some I regretted not bringing a tripod and I had to resort to opening the aperture and ruined the dof. I shot a lot of medium format but I still need to scan them, some I ruined by passing through the TSA X-ray. I’m using Bronica GS-1, fuji color 400h and Kodak Porta. It’s really fun but it takes a toll on my wrist going handheld hehe.

For the Blackmagic stuff I have a video https://vimeo.com/user459280 I shot in Gatlinburg, TN but I ruined the color on export, I must have been tweaking something and forgot to reset, anyway theres fringing everywhere hehe.

      Hi Dane,

Thanks for the well wishes! I’m also the only Fuji shooter in my circle of friends…wait, that’s not true because my best friend bought my X-E1 recently :). Yes, the 56mm is finally coming out. I’m hoping to review it when it does. I went through your flickr photos, and they look fantastic. Those colors from your TN photos are so rich.

Oh yeah, it was the Bronica not the Mamiya. Sorry about that. It’s great to hear that you’re still shooting medium format film. I wish I never sold my old Mamiya lol. Sorry to hear about the X-rayed stuff but if you get a chance, send me a few photos when you get them scanned or send me a link if you post them up on flickr. I’d love to see them. I’ve been shooting some black and white 35mm film (Fuji Neopan) but I haven’t processed any of it yet. I will soon…then I’ll probably post some here.

In terms of your video, it looks great. I don’t really know much about videography but I don’t think you ruined anything. The video is really atmospheric just like the photos you shared with me. It makes me want to visit TN :)!

      All the best,

      Patrick

    Hi Patrick,

I will upload all the medium format stuff I have very soon.
I’ll link some though from before:

I love the range you get from medium format. I hope they keep making 120 film for a while.

      Hi Dane,

Great photos! Yeah, I know what you mean about medium format. I sold my Mamiya 6MF a long time ago but I’ve missed it ever since. When you upload more, let me know. I’ve been shooting a little with my M6, so hopefully, if I ever get some of my 35mm film developed, I’ll post some here.

      Take care,

      Patrick
