Fujifilm X-Series XF 50mm f1 R WR Lens Announced:
Fuji has finally released its fastest X Series lens so far: the XF 50mm f1 R WR lens. This is a 76mm equivalent lens making it perfect for street, event, and of course, portrait photographers. Here are some of the features:
- 76mm equivalent focal length.
- One aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberration.
- Two extra-low dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations.
- Super EBC coating has to help reduce lens flare and ghosting.
- Weather-resistant design prevents dust and moisture from getting into the lens.
- Can be used in freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.
- Rounded nine-blade diaphragm.
- Weight is 845 g.
This looks like it’ll be a fun lens to use, and I can’t wait to test it out. I imagine this will be a dream lens for some. I’d be especially interested to see how it compares to my XF 56mm f1.2 APD. Who knows, maybe the XF 50mm will replacing my XF 56mm f1.2 APD in the near future. The only thing is it might be a bit too large and heavy for some. But then again, this is an f1, short tele equivalent lens with autofocus, and probably decent optics, so an increase in size and weight is to be expected. What do all of you think? I will be very interested in reading how you & others feel about this lens after putting it to some use. It looks to be an extremely capable one for portrait or other low light work, but would not be one I need with what I do. When I had the 90mm f2 lens, it wasn’t the focal length limitation that caused me to sell it but rather the size & weight. But both of these lenses are probably perfect choices for many others out there. The expense is also an issue, so I will just have to get by with my quite excellent 50mm f2 little guy that I can take everywhere I go. Now if Fuji could make a lens like the older Leica 90mm f2.8 I once had, even manual focus only, I would jump for joy. Cheers,

I’m very interested to see what this lens can do. With that said, I would love for them to make something like a 90mm f2.8. I think you’ll still get great bokeh but the size of the lens overall would be quite nice :). Take care,

My experience is very similar to Jed’s. The difference is I had the 56mm f1.2. Great optics but heavy, clunky and slow focus. I got rid of it and got the ‘quite excellent 50 f2’ and have not looked back. The 50mm f1 does look very nice. And very big. And very heavy. And expensive. But still cheaper than medium format. But for what I’m doing now I hardly need it but I’d still like to see your review whenever you do it. One think the 50mm f1has inspired me to do is go out, probably tomorrow if it isn’t too bright and take some photos with the Mitakon 35mm f0.95.

This lens certainly isn’t for everyone but I am still quite interested in seeing how it will perform in real world settings :). Jed mentioned Fuji should come out with a 90mm f2.8 similar to the Leica one. I think that would be really cool. Hope you ended up getting good photos with your time out with the Mitakon :).
